The Ridge of the Gods
We leave Casal Velino and ride along Velia’s coastal route for about 8 km to the archaeological site of Elea-Velia where the Eleatic School was founded by Parmenides and Zeno.
The Angevin Tower overlooks the ruins. We leave the horses outside and make a quick visit to the archaeological site accompanied by an expert guide. We continue our ride through an ancient olive-grove of the “Pisciotta” variety, to join the path of the Ridge of the Gods, close to the terraces sacred to Jupiter. The path runs alongside the walls of the ancient village and is immersed in a beautifully preserved landscape where you can breathe in the typical scents of the Mediterranean scrubland. We ride for about 10 km up to an altitude of 250 metres above sea-level where we can admire an exquisite landscape of the sea, the tower and the two gulfs of Ascea and Casal Velino.
We ride further inland into the National Park of Cilento, keeping ahead of us the Sacred Mount (1705 m above sea-level), destination of many pilgrimages. From the top of the ridge we can admire Lake Petrosa, surrounded by luxuriant vegetation. On our way down the ridge we will ride along the shores of the lake (94 m above sea-level) and enter a thick pine forest where we will stop to rest and let the horses drink. We return to the agritourism in the evening.
